- The Montgomery branch spell their name HERRELL. The information about the descendents of Montgomery was given to me by Eleanor McCallum. In her letter to me she says "Our line insists on spelling the name with an "E", which is the old German way."
My research says the name was originally HEARL and that the family was from the ALSACE on the French-German border. The Family tradition tells of an old grandmother who spoke French. My Grandfather told me that Montgomery Herrell had 13 Uncles in Ireland. The Family left Germany because they were Protestant and went to Holland, then to Ireland, and then to America @1730-1750. I have them in Wythe County, Va with deeds and will. Source: Linda Robinson (Have not confirmed any of the above. HB)

In father William Harrell's estate papers, it lists "Montgomery Harrell's heirs". Therefore, Montgomery is assumed to be dead by 1872.
Other sources say that he died 1890 in Claiborne County, TN. If so, why were his heirs only listed in the estate papers. HB
