9 According to an internet source, "Most of the information on the children of Jacob Matthew Byler was taken from the records in the Jacob Matthew Byler Bible belonging to Miss Jewel Byler of Knob Creek.
Jacob and his family lived in Bedford County, Tennesse until the time of his mother's death in 1842. He then moved first to Hickman County, Tennessee, where Susannah Rucker Byler died on 9-18-1846. On 4-23-1848, Jacob married his second wife; Rachel R. Smith in Hickman County. She was born 2-21-1823 and died 9-9-1879 in Izard County.
About 1851, Jacob and his large family moved from Hickman County, Tennessee to Izard County, settling near Knob Creek. Jacob matthew died on 1-26-1868 and he and his second wife are buried in the Cook Cemetery."

12 Elizabeth Wheeler was the daughter of John Wheeler. She married a man named Duke.
Hanie Wheeler Wharton wrote, "One sister of my (Hanie) grandfather Thomas Wheeler married a very wealthy man named Duke. He (Duke) had the misfortune to kill a man in a fuss in North Carolina and he fled to Louisiana." Gladys Farris added the following note to the original manuscript by Hanie Wheeler Wharton, "I have been told that her name was Elizabeth. I wonder if maybe they divorced and Elizabeth Alexander is her. Just a thought." I know nothing more about Elizabeth Wheeler Duke.

Obituary for Bill R. Maddox
Bill R. Maddox, long-time media relations expert and former journalist, died January 2, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. He was 71 years old and had resided in San Antonio, Texas for 10 years.
Maddox was a senior strategist and media consultant for 13 years at Public Strategies, Inc., headquartered in Austin, from 1996 to 2009 when he retired. He served for nine years as a press secretary of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee and of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, having been appointed by Senator Lloyd M. Bentsen of Texas.
Maddox told his family he may have performed his best press work in May 2006 when he was asked by the family of Senator Bentsen to serve as family spokesperson for his memorial service in Houston and again in September 2006 when former Governor Ann Richards died. Richards' office at Public Strategies, where she also worked, was next to Maddox's office, and she asked him to "handle the media" and announce that she had been diagnosed with cancer. On the day Maddox announced her illness, Richards crowed to Public Strategies employees: "Whoopee, I'm over 70 and I've got my first PR flack of my life."
Maddox was born in Van, Texas, in 1938. He received his first byline at age 14 in his hometown weekly newspaper.
Maddox attended Paris Jr. College, Paris, Texas majoring in journalism. He entered the U.S. Army in 1958, serving in a public relations capacity in the 4th Armored Division in Germany.
In 1961, Maddox began his 15-year newspaper career, working as a reporter on daily newspapers in Irving, Tyler, Marshall, Texarkana and Port Arthur. He began his newspaper career as a general reporter and ended it as executive editor of the Port Arthur News. He won numerous awards and served as president of the Northeast Texas Press Association and on the board of the Texas Press Association.
Maddox was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church and was especially proud of his service at two parishes as head of stewardship committees.
Maddox is survived by his wife of 22 years, Christine Maddox; daughters, Amy Maddox, Stacy DuPreeze, and Katherine Maddox; granddaughter Mackenzie Rabin, grandson Luke Maddox; son-in-law, Louis DuPreez; sisters, Betty Jo Goode and Jean Bass; and brother G.W. Maddox. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, January 5, at Hilliard Funeral Home in Van, Texas.

20 "In his later years, Thomas Love resided at Holly Springs, near Martyn Mission, with his second wife, where some of their children were born. She was a young woman not much older than his eldest children by his first wife. Her name was Ho-Ma-Ho-Ta, part French but mostly Chickasaw of the house of I-Tok-Alba.
"Homahota, the second wife of Thomas Love, was called Mehotey, Homahoti, and in her late life even granny Ho-Ti. Although Mehota is on her tombstone, I prefer to use Homahota. Mr. E. T. 29 . DAVID WHEELER (1790-1848) (John)

David Wheeler was born in 1790, in Greenville District, South Carolina, the son of John Wheeler. The 1830 and 1840 census returns place his age 40-49, which means his birth year had to be 1790, and he undoubtedly turned 50 after the 1840 enumeration.
He married Elizabeth Courson McMakin, 17 January 1811, in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. She was born 25 April 1797, in Spartanburg District, South Carolina, the daughter of Benjamin Perrine and Mary (Carr) McMakin.
Benjamin Perrine McMakin was born 6 May 1763, probably in Loudoun County, Virginia, the son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Corsen) McMakin, and passed away about 28 April 1804 in Spartanburg District. Mary Carr was born 5 August 1764 in Loudoun County, Virginia, the daughter of Peter and Rachel (Caldwell) Carr. She passed away in Spartanburg District South Carolina, 11 September 1852.
David Wheeler purchased several parcels of land in Spartanburg District, and Elizabeth inherited a parcel from the estate of her father:

John Burns, J. P.

David owned adjacent land when John McMakin deeded a tract of land on the south side of Thomson's Creek, waters of the South Tyger River to his sons John and Alexander for $1,088 on 28 October 1839 (Book X, pp. 286-287).
There were several other deeds witnessed by David Wheeler. However, it is unclear whether they were by this David Wheeler or by his nephew David Wheeler, son of Jesse G. Wheeler and Jane McMakin Wheeler. One deed to a John Wheeler was witnessed by Jesse G. Wheeler and a David Wheeler.
David and Elizabeth settled on a farm between and near the junction of the Middle Tyger River and Beaverdam Creek, just south of Piney Grove Church. They operated a water powered grist mill and engaged in farming. The Mills Atlas of South Carolina, published in 1825, but based upon information gathered earlier, includes the mill about 1 3/4 miles from McMakin Tavern.
At the death of Mary "Granny Mack" McMakin, a division of her property was necessary, and with most of the children of David and Elizabeth Wheeler out of state, a lawsuit resulted. It listed the children of David and Elizabeth as well as the other heirs of the estate who brought the suit as follows:

"Whereas Jane Wheeler, John McMakin, Fielding Sudduth & Rebecca Sudduth, his wife, Benjamin McMakin, John Booker & wife Elizabeth Booker, James McMakin, Alexander McMakin, David W. Moore, and wife Mary E. Moore, Andrew A. McMakin & William D. McMakin lately filed their bill in the court of Equity for said District, against John Wheeler, Alexander Wheeler, Andrew Wheeler, Peter Wheeler, Jesse Wheeler, Mack Wheeler, Thomas Wheeler, Elizabeth Wheeler and Jane Wheeler, John Davis and Margaret Davis his wife, James Robertson and Mary Robertson his wife, Amos Smith and Adeline Smith his wife, being the legal heirs and representatives of Mary McMakin, deceased..."

David Wheeler was a Jeffersonian (and later a Jacksonian) Democrat, and a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He was of English ancestry, and reportedly also Scottish ancestry.
Elizabeth Wheeler passed away 3 November 1843 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. She was 46 years of age. Six years before, in 1837, her son Andrew Jackson Wheeler, and her daughter Rachel Adeline Smith had gone west to Fayette County, Alabama. Both had married children of Edward Smith, Andrew having married Achsah, and Adeline having married Amos Smith.
Beginning in 1845, several other members of the family also migrated, with the biggest migration, that of her sons Peter, Mack and Thomas, and her daughters Margaret, Jane and Elizabeth, taking place in 1847.
The following year, on 7 February 1848, David Wheeler passed away. At the time of his passing, only John and Alexander were residing in South Carolina. Alexander was named executor of his father's estate. Following are some typical examples of the orders of probate:

October 3rd 1849

David was laid to rest in a grave unknown to this writer. Each of the children received just over twenty dollars in the estate settlement, with the exception of Rachel who passed away before the final disbursement. Her children split her portion.
David raised a fine God-fearing family, active in civic and church affairs. Andrew served as a County Commissioner, and Jesse as a Constable and Church spokesman. Mack was the prime mover in the founding of the Mount Zion Church. Peter was the first clerk of the Church, and so on. The girls married fine citizens who were also active in civic and church affairs. All of the boys served in the army of the Confederacy, John as a Captain. Peter gave his life for that cause.

30 . SARAH WHEELER (1778- ) (John)

Sarah Wheeler was born between 1776 and 1784, and probably about 1778. She is said to have married James Taylor. They were enumerated in the 1810 and 1820 census of Rutherford County, Tennessee. Letters written by her nephew William Wheeler in Decatur, Illinois establish that she was a member of this family. James and Sarah were members of the Beesley Baptist Church in Rutherford County, Tennessee prior to 1810. One report states that they moved to Gibson County, Tennessee, but I have found no evidence to support that claim. The James Taylor who apparently married Sarah Wheeler was the son of James Taylor, Senior. James, Senior and his wife Nancy joined Enon Baptist Church in Bedford County, Tennessee by letter in July 1824. Elliott and Stacy Rucker and Thomas Wheeler also attended there. By August 1824 he was ordained a Deacon. In August 1825, Timothy Sugg was ordained as Deacon to replace James Taylor who had died, which establishes his death at about that time. He is undoubtedly the James Taylor below:

If he was married to Nancy at the time of his death, he could not have married a Sarah as some have stated.
Following is the James Taylor that I believe is the correct one, as the order of enumeration on that page is:

William Wheeler
Elliott Rucker
John Saunders
Joseph Haynes
John Haynes
Absolum Taylor
James Taylor

William Wheeler, Elliott Rucker and John Saunders are all related to John Wheeler, Senior through his children.

I received the following Email concerning her Taylor family:
My interest in the Taylor side is Keziah/Kesiah, who was said to be a daughter of James Taylor and his wife Ann "Nancy" Owen. (His second wife was Sarah??). Somewhere I found that the Hill link was a Niece of James, not a daughter, but I can't find any of it at the moment.
I have James L (not sure about middle initial) Taylor, Senior, b. 1740 VA, d. 1820, NC. married Ann "Nancy" Owen, b. 1740 VA, d. NC, married 1758 VA. Had the following children: 1) Absolum Taylor, b. 1760, (prob Henry Co., VA, d. 1790, married Sarah ---?---. ; 2) James L Taylor, Jr, b. 1765, Henry Co., VA, d. Rutherford Co., TN. married Elizabeth White, b. 1760, married in 1790, Rutherford Co., TN, had daughter Nancy, b. 1806.; 3) Kesiah A Taylor, b. March 3, 1775, Henry Co., VA, d. ca 1860, Rutherford Co., TN, married William Hill ca 1800 in VA.(my line); 4) Dorcus Taylor, b. 1777, Rutherford Co., NC, married a ---?--- Arnold; 5) Susannah Taylor, b. ca 1779, Rutherford Co., TN, married Joseph Gilliland May 18, 1816 in Rutherford Co., TN.; 6) Sarah Taylor, b. ca 1779 (they MAY have been twins???/also COULD have been 1778-1800? depending on which census you find it in?) Rutherford Co., NC, 7) Chloe Taylor, b. 1784, Rutherford Co., NC, married Williford Rucker ca 1783 in Rutherford Co, NC and had a son named Mordecai Rucker, b. ca 1785. 8) Michael Taylor, b. 1787 Rutherford Co., NC, married Jane Smith in 1810, Rutherford Co., TN.; 9) Jesse, b. 1789, Rutherford Co., NC; 10) Aaron Taylor, b. 1790 Rutherford Co., NC, married Martha Daniel in 1816, Rutherford Co., TN.
The connection to the Rucker's that I show in other notes is that a Margaret "Maggie" Hill, who was b. between 1841-1846 in Rutherford Co., TN and a daughter of Moses Hill who was a son of William and Kesiah (Taylor) Hill (above) married a Rucker. That's a pretty big time span, but shows them being together in the Rutherford Co., TN area for years!!"
In another Email she wrote, "I have children of James and Nancy Owen Taylor as: Absolum, James, Kesiah, Dorcus and Sarah. I have children of James and Sarah (Wheeler) Taylor as: Chloe, Michael, Aaron, Jesse and Susanna. I have DOB's for Jesse as June 12, 1795 and Susanna as 1802. Jesse married Catherine "Caty" Holt, I have family info on him. They both died in Jefferson Co., AL and are buried at the Mt Calvery Cemetery in Clayton's Cove, Jefferson Co. AL.
Susanna married Joseph Gilleland May 31, 1816 in Rutherford Co., TN and died Apr 24, 1882 in Rutherford Co., TN.
Dorcus married James Arnold and had a son James Lee Arnold. I show several generations of this line.
Sarah "Sary" married Alexander Patterson and I show several generations of this line."

There has been some conjecture that James and Sarah (Wheeler) Taylor were the parents of the following:

51. Jesse Taylor, b. 12 Jun 1795, NC; d. 23 May 1860, Clayton's Cove, Jefferson Co, AL;
md. Catherine Holt, 30 Jul 1816, Rutherford Co, TN
52. Aaron Taylor, b. abt 1797, NC; d. after 1880, Clay, Jefferson Co, AL; md. Martha
Daniel
53. Susannah Taylor, b. abt 1802, d. 24 Apr 1882, Rutherford Co, TN; md. Joseph (or
Joel) Gilliland, 31 May 1816, Rutherford Co, TN

However, the grave of Sarah Taylor, mother of Aaron and Jesse at Mount Cavalry Cemetery, Clay, Jefferson County, Alabama records her birth as 14 September 1762 and her death as 13 July 1837. Though the birth is only three years prior to that of Margaret (Wheeler) Farmer, it doesn't seem to coincide with the census records above.
The families of Jesse, Aaron and Susannah are known, but will not be included here unless these questions can be answered.
I have also seen speculation that Michael Taylor (b. abt 1787; md. Jane Smith, Rutherford Co, TN, May 1810 is a son of both James, Senior and Junior. I just don't know the truth.

31 . STACY WHEELER (1784-1866)

Stacy Wheeler was born 1 November 1784 in North Carolina, daughter of John Wheeler.
She married Elliott Rucker, 10 October 1801 in South Carolina. He was born 1 December 1772 in North Carolina, son of Mordecai and _____ (Martin) Rucker.
Elliott and Stacy Rucker were received at Enon Baptist Church in Bedford County, by 'experience and baptism" in September 1821. In June of 1830, "Brother Rucker" was excused from the church for the sin of drinking and fighting.
Elliott Rucker of Bedford County, Tennessee sold land on Alexander's Creek to Jeremiah B. Boothe on 10 August 1835 (Book GG, p. 70). Alexander's Creek was named after Ebeneezer Alexander the original owner of the property. The name Alexander appears in the family, but no link has been made to the Alexander family.
Elliott passed away 29 November 1841 in Unionville, Bedford County, Tennessee, and Stacy passed away 8 December 1866 in Bedford County, Tennessee. She was laid to rest at Enon Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Bedford County.
Blair Wheeler sent the following excerpt from the book History of the Rucker Family, by Edith Rucker Whitely (1927) and in the possession of Jean Holman:
"Elliott (Rucker son of Mordecai) married Stacy Wheeler. I wish to repeat here just a short note from Mr. J. C. Carter of Decatur, Illinois, whom you will find descends from the Rucker family.
Mr. Carter's statement follows:
"Mrs. Martha Hanie Wharton, of Woodbury, Tennessee, now in her 80th year, informs me through recent correspondence that her grandfather, Thomas Wheeler was a brother of Stacy Wheeler, and the sister that married James Rucker. Mrs. Wharton further states that her father Dave Wheeler visited his Uncle William Wheeler, Sr. (My Note: actually his first cousin, PGW) in Decatur, Illinois during the winter of 1860-61. William Wheeler, Junior being Sheriff of Macon County at the time. She remembers her father also speaking of Sam Wheeler and his cousin Judge Rucker.
"It is a well known fact that this William Wheeler, Senior is a brother of our James Wheeler, the father of Hiram, Larkin, Washington and Elliott and Mrs. Charley Wheeler, the mother of Alph Warren, Mollie, James and Doc Wheeler whom you all know so well. By establishing the brother and sister relationship as shown above, you can readily figure that William Wheeler, Senior, the father of ex-sheriff William Wheeler, Junior was an uncle of our grandfathers John and William Rucker, while Larkin, Wash, Elliott and Mrs. Charley Wheeler were cousins."
Elliott and Stacy Wheeler had the following family:

67. William R. Rucker, b. 8 Jul 1803; d. 25 Apr 1850; md. Betsy Rushing
68. Elizabeth Rucker, b. 7 Oct 1804; md 1. Joel Kimmins; md 2. ________ Wood

71. Violet Rucker, b. 7 May 1809; md. Jesse Morris
72. Jesse Rucker, b. 23 Dec 1810; d. 23 Dec 1810; not married
73. Vienna Rucker, b. 22 Jul 1812; md. Edmond Grimmage
74. Jordan Rucker, b. 22 Jan 1814; md. Drucilla Jackson
75. Mary "Polly" Rucker, b. 18 Nov 1815; md. James Madison Rucker
76. Anderson Rucker, b. 18 Nov 1817; md. Permelia Rushing
77. Solomon Rucker, b. 2 Oct 1819; d. 14 Apr 1861; md. Sabine Moore

33 1. This "John Wylie" is referred to as 'No. 2' or Jr. in manuscript by R. G. Boatright. The pedigree found in 'World Family Tree' Vol. 3, #5321 shows another (John III). This difference could well be explained by a note in R. G. Boatright's manuscript: "Mrs. J. H. Campbell, of Plattsburg, MO, formerly Elizabeth Irene Wylie, a granddaughter of Carey Allen Wylie, says that John Wylie (Jr) had several children by a previous marriage, one of whom she remembers
quite well. His name was SAMUEL WYLIE and he lived, many years ago, at Rushville, Missouri, near St. Joseph.
2. Date of death estimated based on date of Deed in which John's daughter, Elizabeth (Wylie) Thompson, transfers her part of John's estate to her brothers, David and Harvey Wylie.
3. From Notes by RG Boatright:
"...In a letter from my Aunt Ellen Ballard (re Wylie #30), dated February 1, 1928, she gave me the birth/death dates of her siblings....She also made this statement: 'My great-grandmother Wylie was coming over from Ireland and she died on the trip and was buried at sea.' This clarifies the matter concerning the wife of John Wylie (#1) and also establishes the birth place of John #1 and also his children, John Jr, Peter, Alex and Thomas who all came into Kentucky from Virginia in 1785."

34 100. ELIZABETH A. WHEELER (1838-1898) (David, John)

Elizabeth A. Wheeler was born about 1838, in Spartanburg District, South Carolina, and the daughter of David and Elizabeth Courson (McMakin) Wheeler.
She probably came to Fayette County, Alabama with her older brothers and sisters in 1847, and by 1850 was listed among the members of the South Carolina Baptist Church, south of Vernon, Alabama, though she did not appear in the 1850 census of that year.
The probate of her grandmother Mary (Carr) McMakin (13 December 1852) verifies her absence from the State of South Carolina.
She married Joseph Williams about the year 1857. He was born in South Carolina about the year 1837. They had three children, namely Margaret, James and Elizabeth.
Joseph was killed in the Civil War. He was undoubtedly the J. D. Williams who enlisted in Company D, 26th Alabama Infantry (CSA) and was killed at Chancellorsville, Virginia 2 May 1863. A number of Wheelers and Wheeler relatives also served in Company D, 26th Infantry. They included Elizabeth's brothers, nephews and cousins.
The 1864 Tax List of Fayette County, Alabama lists Elizabeth Williams residing in North River Beat, widow of a Confederate Soldier who was killed in action. It was noted that they had an 80-acre tract of land.
There were also soldiers named Joseph Williams in Company I, 12th Alabama; Company E, 2nd Alabama Light Infantry, Captain Ward's Battalion, Alabama Light Artillery; Company F, 16th Alabama Infantry; Company B, 2oth Alabama Infantry, and Company C, 33rd Alabama Infantry.
Joseph, Elizabeth and their children were enumerated in the 1860 census, and Elizabeth and the children in later census returns.
It is known that Elizabeth passed away by 1899, because it was noted in the probate of her brother-in-law John Ballenger Davis in that year, that she was deceased.
Her son James D. Williams was selected as the administrator for the estate of John Ballenger Davis, as Peter Carr Wheeler and Margaret (Wheeler) Davis who had been chosen as administrators had both passed away prior to that date.
It is also known that Elizabeth didn't pass away much before that date, as Sally (Wheeler) Johnson attended her funeral.
The Davis probate attests that James, Margaret and Elizabeth, children of Elizabeth (Wheeler) Williams all resided in Lamar County, and all under the name Williams.
Elizabeth C. Williams (b. June 1862) had married William J. Williams 29 December 1891 in Lamar County. Margaret apparently did not marry. She may be the Margaret Williams (b. Sep 1858) residing with Alfred and Nancy Blakely in the 1900 census. The family of James D. Williams is unknown to this writer at present.
