Edward C. "Ned" Miller, 84, 0f 948 Afton Mountain Road, died Friday, November 4, 2005 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. He was born on May 15, 1921, at Afton, Nelson County, a son of the late John Lacy Miller and Sarah Kathleen Fortune Miller. In 1983, Mr. Miller retired from Wilson Trucking Co., as a diesel mechanic, with over 20 years of service. In his retirement he enjoyed his garden, yard work, his family and his dog, Mac. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, where he served under General George Patton, with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Among the decorations and citations he received were the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Miller; three sons, Gerhard Miller of Salzburg, Austria, Ralph Miller and his wife Connie of Afton and Eric Miller of Waynesboro; one daughter, Yvonne M. Flory and her husband James of Dayton; four sisters, Lucy Johnson of Afton, Clara Hawkins of Richmond, Phoebe Kanai of Afton and Nita Thon and her husband, Walter of Williamsburg; three grandchildren, Scott and Erica Miller and Roger Hallman and his great-granddaughter, Emersyn; numerous nephews and nieces and special friends, Roger and Jane Wells. Graveside services will be held at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, November 7, 2005, with Pastor James Hartwick officiating. Military honors will be rendered by Stuarts Draft V. F. W. Post 9339. There will be no formal family night, however, those who wish, may view Mr. Miller at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Service, Sunday, November 6th from 1:00 p.m.- 8:00p.m. and on Monday until 12 noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rockfish Valley Rescue Squad, 11000 Rockfish Valley Highway, Afton, VA 22920 or to the Wintergreen Rescue Squad, Box 587, Wintergreen, VA 22958.
