- Article 293 from Laclede County History book. "Hazael & second wife Mary Cox, with their daughter Sara Jane (Wilson) came to Laclede County, in 1855 and homesteaded a place in the Simlin Vicinity.... The old Simlin Cemetery is located on the Old Homeplace now owned by J.R. McDaniel. There were two buildings located near the cemetery. One was log and was the Simlin school, the other was of sawed lumber, it was the Simlin Baptist Church. The new Simlin or Harrill Cemetery is located one fourth mile South on the opposite side of State Road N. Hazael is buried in the new cemetery, his wife Mary in the old cemetery.
Source: Dede Harrill Report on Samuel H. Harrill descendents gives name of 2nd wife as Mary Harendon vice Mary Cox, as stated in above article. It has children of both wives reversed. We need to sort this out.
PENSION Application #4374 Mexican War -- enlisted at Cotton Port, TN abt. 6/16/1846. States:"Born as Hazel W. Harrol now Hazael W. Harrill. Says that Hazel W. Harrill enrolled at the Topeka Pension Agency at he rate of $8.00 per month. Says that he is wholly disable for manual labor and the $8.00 is insufficient to provide the necessaries of life. Gives disabilities as "rupture, heart disease, and rhumatism".
He served as a Private in Capt. John D. Lowry's Co of 2nd Regiment of TN Infantry Vols, commanded by Col. Kaskell. Says that he was 65yrs old at the time, and that he was born in Hawkins Co., TN 17 Sept 1821.
1st Wife, Mary A. Ballinger's death date given in the Survivor's Application for Service Pension for Mexican War, witnessed by G.A. Harrill, S.A. Harrill (wife of M.A. Harrill) and says that her husband was brother of the applicant and J.D. Ballinger.
Hazael is living at present time in Smith Twp, Laclede, MO. He says that he has lived in MO for 30 yrs. In 1893, Hazael W. Harrill, age 71 says that he is a resident of Selkirk, Laclede, MO. Samuel B. says that he lives about 10 miles East of Lebanon, Laclede, MO. Stoutland, Camden, MO. is also mentioned in June 1887.
On Apr. 8, 1887, S.A. Harrill duly sworn, deposes and says: "from letters written by applicant to my husband, M.A. Harrill(a brother of applicant Hazael) while he was in Mexica: which I have seen and heard read." She also state that her husband is now deceased."
On Apr. 9, 1887, G.A. Harrill duly sworn, deposes and says: "that Hazael was gone from home a year more or less, and that he sent letters back at various times from Mexico to my father (M.A. Harrill, brother of Hazael) which he has seen."
Mexican War Survivor's Service Pension #20182-160-47(another paper has 20182-660-47 handwritten on it) -- gives the following info: Enlisted: June 16, 1846 & Discharged April 18, 1947 at the age of 60.
Note: both J.D. Ballinger & Gallant Herendon are mentioned in the Pension Application.
In 1850 Monroe Co. Census: H.W. Herrell 28 laborer VA and Robert L. 21 Laborer VA living in HH#652, Dist. 2. Abel Ricketts 56 VA and Matilda 49 VA and Sarah 61 VA. Note: Abel Ricketts is bur. in Christianburg Cem.)
1870 Smith twp, Laclede, MO HH#208-188 Hasel W. Herrel 51 TN, also living in same HH is Sarah Ballinger 55 TN housekeeper (sister of Hazel's 1st wife was Mary A Ballinger). Children: Sarah J. 13 TN; Samuel B. 11 MO; Dicy A. 9 MO; Robert M. 7 MO; taken from Mexican War Pension Application # 4374 dtd 9 Apr 1887. (approx. 19 pages).
