James McClelland Phillips, 86, former Independence farmer died Friday evening, April 19, at his home in Venice, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles. The deceased was a native of Barbour County, a son of the late Asa and Ada Pell Black Phillips. He lived almost all his life in Preston County and retired from his farm at Independence in 1936 and went to California to make his home.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Eunice Cordella Pierce Phillips, the following daughters, Mrs. Maude A. Jenkins, at home and Mrs. J. A. (Loretta Virginia Phillips) Stuck of Cumberland, Md. and three sons, William Ulysses Phillips. of Cumberland, Md. and Lloyd Pierce Phillips. and Robert Richard Phillips, both of Venice, Calif. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nellie Gertrude Phillips on September 18, 1906 and two sons, Dennis McClelland Phillips on February 9, 1937 in Venice, Calif and Albert Morgan Phillips on August 9, 1941 in Independence, WV
The body was expected to leave Venice yesterday at noon and is expected to arrive here (Cumberland, Md.) Saturday when it will be taken to the Stein funeral home.
The body will lie in state at the Methodist church of Newburg from 12 to 2 o'clock Sunday, April 28. Interment will be in the Knights of Pythias cemetery of Newburg. The Rev. Stoneking Groves, pastor of the Knoxville, WV Methodist circuit will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Job Jones, Methodist minister of Pine Grove, W. Va. and the Rev. Mr. Hockenberry.
Pallbearers will be Robert M. Phillips, a grandson; Charles W. Phillips and Clara Phillips; Robert Hardy, James Edward Engle and Edward Cornwall.
(Note: An obituary in the Cumberland Times-News, Cumberland, Md. obviously submitted by Mrs. James A. Stuck, daughter of the deceased, indicated he was survived by one grandson, James A. Stuck, Jr. of 121 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, Md. The facts are there were numerous grand children residing in Maryland, West Virginia and California, one of which was a pall bearer.)
