Notes |
- Ben F. Cole was found on the 1910 Census living in Collinsville Precinct #6 ED 37 page 4B. He was listed with his spouse and three children. He was born in Alabama, however, his father was born in South Carolina and his mother in Tennessee. He was a farmer on a rented farm. According to the census he could not read or write. Records also indicate that he was 30 years old at the time of the census and had been married for 6 years. The road he lived on was Mountain Gap Road.
UPDATE:The confusion has been cleared up. Ben and Martha Cole recorded Ben F. Cole under the name Joseph on one census and and as Joe on another census. This through me off until I found that Ben used the name Joe on a census as an adult with his family. Mom tells me that He had severa names, something like: Benjamin Franklin Joseph Monroe Cole. In 1910 he was listed as Ben F. Cole with Wife named Dollie and three children. They were Ben Jr., John and Martha. Then I found a 1920 Census with a man named Joe Cole with a wife named Dollie and 7 children. The first three were the same named children in the same birth order as the children to Ben F. Cole in 1910. Since the home was in the same spot, the wife's name was the same and the first three children matched the same three children on the 1910 census, I concluded that Joe was Ben F. Cole as well as the Joseph and Joe listed with Ben and Martha Cole in 1880 and 1900.Ben is the name people still livining remember him by and it is the name that will be used at this time, however, I will search for death records on him. If it is discovered that he used Joe at his death and on burial records, then I will officially change his given name to Joe as that is the name his parents used for him until he was atleast 23 years old. At age about 30 - 33 he was using the name Ben. Other confirming information comes from Mom who reported that Ben Jr. and John Jackson Cole were the only 2 boys in 8 children. On the 1920 Census Joe Cole AKA Ben, had two sons and 5 daughters. The youngest was 1 year and 1 month old. There was one more daughter to be born some time after the 1920 census taken 15 Jan 1920.
4/15/01 - Conversation with John P. Locke regarding name of Ben Cole. According to his mother, Eloise, his full name was Benjamin Franklin Joe Sir James Monroe Cole.
