- Hannah was listed as Hannah Naling in Shenandoah County, VA marriage records, but two deeds (one to and one from) James Breeding Jr. and Hannah his wife tend to prove that she was Hannah Newland, daughter of Daniel Newl and Sr of Shenandoah County, VA.

The above records show that James Breeden Jr's. wife was Hannah Newland and not Hannah Naling and that she was probably a daughter of Daniel Newland Sr. I presume that the reason she is not mentioned in his will (Proved 19 February 1788 in Shenandoah County, VA) is that the above 130 Acres was her inheritance and she already had it before Daniel's death. -- J. In April and May of 1807, John, James, William and William Breeding,J r. had their property surveyed in order to file claims for land grants wi th the State of TN. The land grants were issued in June 1810. These proper ties were located in Sevier County at the base of English Mountain in an a rea known as Jones Cove. Several property records mention the East Fo rk of the Little Pigeon River and Wilhite's Creek.
The record Book of the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Chur ch is a valuable historical document that has been preserved by The Fir st Baptist Church of Sevierville. In 1819, the Bethel Church was constitut ed into a distinct church of 53 members. Among these members were James B reeden, Hanner(Hannah) Breeden, William Breeding, Sr., Elizabeth Breeden a nd Sarah Breeden. In January 1821, William Breeden and wife Sarah Breed en along with Elizabeth Breeden were granted a letter of dismission.(It mi ght suggest they were moving, perhaps from the region)
In the 1830 Sevier County Census, Hannah Breeden was listed as the he ad of household. Her age was listed as 60 but not yet 70. She was living w ith two females age 20 but not yet 30, a male five but not yet ten years o ld and two males under age five. Also listed as heads of households were J ohn Breeden, age 30-4; Bryant Breeden, age 20-30 and William Breeden, a ge 40-50. This information suggests that James died before 1830.
In the 1850 Sevier County census, Hannah Breeden was listed as 85 yea rs old and living in the household of Joseph Webb and his wife Lydia w ho is 40. Lydia was likely a daughter of Hannah. William Breeden named o ne of his daughters Lydia. The earlier Breeden's appeared to observe t he naming customs of the day in which to oldest son was named for his fat her, the second son named after the mother's father, the third son is nam ed after the father himself. The fourth through the end son is named aft er a favorite brother or friend(usually of the fathers) The eldest daught er was named after the maternal grandmother, the second daughter after t he paternal grandmother and the third daughter after the mother. There we re other variations, but the Breeden's named their children after family m embers.
There has been a loss of Sevier County records due to fire whi ch is regrettable because it has made associating James and Hannah Breed en as the progenitors of the Sevier County Breeden's difficult. Researche rs show that James Breeding, Sr.(b abt 1735) in Shenandoah County, VA a nd died about 1804 in Lee County Virginia and his wife Sarah had the follo wing children: James Breeding, Jr, Jeremiah Breeding, Sylvia(Siley) Breed ing, Bryant Breeding, Byron Breeding and Elizabeth Breeding. James Breedin g, Jr. was born about 1765 in Shenandoah. County. While other siblings a re documented with information about their wives and children, James is li sted with only his wife, Hannah Naling/Newland. There are listed as marri ed February 25, 1784 in Shenandoah County, Va. The Breedings of Virginia h ad the names Bryant, William, John and James as prominent names as do t he Sevier County Breeden's. Sevier County researchers continue looking f or proof of a connection to the Shenandoah County and Lee County Breedings. - billan36@vallnet.com
