"Jesse Hurst, son of John Hurst II, was born in 1773 in Shenandoah County, and died in 1858 in Putnam County, Indiana. He married Nancy McCarty, a sister to Catherine McCarty Hurst. Jesse Hurst came with his brother, Absalom, to Claiborne County in about the year 1800. He married on February 17, 1795 in Shenandoah County, Virginia and soon afterward moved to Wythe County, where he resided a few years. In June 5, 1805 he purchased a tract of land on the north side of Powell's River from William Kyle. His home was at Elk's Bend, opposite the mouth of Hoop Creek.
In 1831, two of Jesse's sons, George and David, together with kinsman, Abram Hurst rode horseback from Claiborne County to Putnam County where they bought land and established homes. Abram was born in Virginia in 1787 and went from Indiana to Andrew County, Missouri.
On November 10, 1822 Jesse Hurst sold to Isaac Gabble fifty acres at the mouth of Hoop Creek, north banks of Powell's River, for the sum of $250. In the same year he sold a small tract to George Hurst for $50. He moved to Putnam County, Indiana by December 12, 1823.
Jesse Hurst' children were: 1. James who died in infancy, 2. Elizabeth who married January 6, 1829, 3. George who was born July 25, 1799 and died April 8, 1865, 4. David, who married Cynthia Johnston, 5. Pleasant, who died unmarried, 6. Burton who was born January 5, 1808 and died March 2, 1865, 7. Catherine, who was born February 4, 1810 and died September 7, 1897, 8. Lucy, who was born March 8, 1812 and died July 18 1875, 9. Pernety, who was born in 1816 and married James Hurst February 21 1851 (James was born in 1826), 10. Harmon, who was born in 1818 and married Mary Turner on December 24 1838. They moved to Arkansas."

Jesse and Nancy Hurst received into the church Jan. 1824.
Absalom and Caty Hurst - March 1824
"In 1828 Absalom and Jesse Hurst had a difference evidently over rebuilding and shingling the roof. The church appointed a committee to labour with them for the special purpose of getting these brethern together. The committee reported that they laboured with them and the difficulty was not settled. The church agreed to take up the case and try the crime or crimes, if any, against the Brethren at the next meeting. They were found guilty of wounding the cause of Gion and wounding each others feelings to which the Brethern agreed and acknowledged they were sorry for the same and wished forgiveness of each other and the church forgave and restored them to their former standing in the Society.
At the same meeting the church agreed to erase out what they had done concerning shingling the meeting house and release Brethern William Hurst and William McCarty who were to super-intend the project.
In March 1830 the church dismissed a group of Brethern and Sisters [by letter] to form themselves into a new constitution. They were: Absalom Hurst, Catharine Hurst, John Sherrill, Caleb Buis, Margaret Buis, Jane Reden, Wm. Parker, Candice Parker, Martha Branham, Elizabeth Cotton and Polly Norlser.
The last abstract in this book was of July, 1830. Jesse Hurst was appointed with others to act as Trustees to get funds by subscription to repair the meeting house as far as the funds go.
This church is still active and is still attended by Hursts. It is located six miles southwest of Greencastle, Indiana.
