Military Service: BET SEP 1861 AND 1864 Bryant L.
Military Service: MAY 1865 Reenlisted
Event: Census of Conf. Soldiers 1907 Names Lafomly as birthplace
Married the preacher's (Reverend Thomas J. Norris) daughter. All but four children of Sarah and Bryant died of diphtheria. After Sarah died in 1876 Lafe married his second wife Canelia Ann Smith and had a second family.
William R. Maddox and his younger brother George W. Maddox who lived nearby married sisters from the same family, William marrying Rachel Jane Hewitt, and George marrying Harriet C. Hewitt. Rachel and Harriet were cousins of Sarah Jane Norris, who married B L Maddox.
Bryant L. Maddox, 2nd Sergeant Enlisted at Samantha, AL until 1864 Co. G. 26th Ala. Reg. became 50th Infantry Reg. Reenlisted in 1865 until May 1865 56th Ala. Reg.
Death Certificate #240 lists Jno. and Elizabeth Maddox as parents. Will of John Maddox lists "B.L." as one of the children. Bryant's real name was Benjamin but he changed it to Bryant when his younger brother by that name died. This was common when the name is a family name. They did not want to lose the name "Bryant" and it was a respect for his deceased brother. On the 1860 census he was "Benj." with wife Sarah and on the 1870 census he was in the same place 10 years older as "Bryant" with wife Sarah. His military records are "Bryant" or "B.L." and his death certificate is "Benjiman."
