On 14 September 1778 William Chiles, and Agnes his wife, of Berkeley Parish in Spotsylvania County, sold land in that parish. Two years later, on 21 Spetember 1780, William and Agnes Chiles sold 262 acres of land in Spotsylvania County for ? 2000. It was probably soon after this that they moved to South Carolina.
The family moved from Virginia to South Carolina in the early 1780s, and settled at the area which came to be known as Chiles Crossroads near the present village of Bradley in Greenwood County.
William bought 400 acres of land in December 1791 along Hard Labor Creek. This land, located about a mile east of the present town of Bradley, was purchased by William Chiles from the Estate of Gen. Andrew Williamson. The original Chiles homestead was built here, but was later dismantled, moved, and rebuilt along State Highway 10, about a mile south of Bradley. The Chiles Family Cemetery is located near the original homesite. In the center of the cemetery stands a memorial marker to William Chiles enclosed by an iron fence which was erected by family members, but was badly damaged by a tree falling on it in a windstorm. In 1999 the site had become rough and overgrown, and stood in an area recently lumbered and covered with slash. Nevertheless, several dozen fieldstones remained to mark gravesites, and tiny white periwinkles formed a groundcover throughout this large family cemetery.
1790 Census - Edgefield Co, SC; p.64; Wm Childs; 03-01-03-00-20
1800 Census - Abbeville Co, SC; p.7; William Childs 00121-00111-0-18
The boundary line between Edgefield and Abbeville Counties was ill defined in 1790 (surveyed in 1793). Many households in Abbeville in 1800 are found in the 1790 Edgefield census.
